My pen pal Jaimie runs a blog called Legos in my Pocket. She has graciously accepted my interview request, so that we can learn all about her blog, and blogging in general. ❤
1. Where are you from? Have you thought of living anywhere else?
I am originally from Kent, WA. I was born & raised here, and have spent most of my life here. I have lived elsewhere before, though not far. Spokane, WA is my second home. Ryan & I own a home there and plan on returning next summer.
2. When did you start blogging? Was Legos in my pocket your first blog?
Well I signed up for blogger and began with reading blogs a good time before I actually began blogging. I finally started my blog, “Legosinmypocket” in September 2010. Ryan and I had got married and moved in with some very good friends of ours about a year before and our antics always made for good stories after. When my friend found out they were going to have a baby, I figured no better time than this to get to writing. It would be all of our first experience having a baby in our lives 24/7 since we were kids. Sounded like a recipe for disaster and fun 🙂 Though I do have another blog, “Pocket Memories,” where I mostly post random pictures I have taken somewhere along the line that I find interesting or pretty.
3. Walk me through the process that you went through to get your blog to where it is today.
I didn’t put alot of thought into moving my blog along, I just worked my way though it. As I said before I started by reading other blogs and commenting as much as I could, establishing a community base. Then I started by writing about my everyday going on. What we did that day, conversations we had that were interesting.. Then I started joining in on blog hops and other things like that. Photo scavenger hunts and writing prompts. Soon i found a groove that worked for me.. Started to get a real rhythm to my posts.
4. What made you start a blog in the first place?
It was just a creative outlet. something to focus on. Ryan & I were desperately trying to have a baby and I really needed something to distract me, otherwise be consumed by thoughts of cycles, ovulation charts, doctors appointments and such. Writing was my escape.
5. How long were you running your blog before you started getting many followers?
I’m not sure how many followers I ever really had, or when they came around. Though I do believe that interaction on your blog coincides directly with your participation on other blogs. The more active you are in the community, the more traffic and feedback you will receive.
6. You put a lot of personal stories on your blog, how does your husband feel about that?
My husband and I had a long talk when I first started my blog about what was okay & what wasn’t. In the end, he said he trusted my judgment. Ryan & I try our best not to live in a reality ruled by others opinions and judgments of our personal choices. We are hard enough on ourselves most of the time as it is, let along listen to everybody else give their two cents. That being said I do try to be respectful about who I involve on my blog. Most everyone has no quarrels, but for those who have changes have been made. I try to use power of good judgment calls as much as possible when writing a life story down. Sometimes I will change peoples names, sometimes I wont.. It all depends on the lifeblood of the story. I do try to protect other peoples images, even when I really should give a rat’s toot.
7. Now that you are no longer roommates with your bestie and her hubby, are they going to be a part of your blog still?
Due to the nature of our falling out, I have not taken down past posts regarding my old roommates, though I have removed their personal links from the “Meet the Family” page. As of the moment they are no longer a part of the Legos In My Pocket storyline, & I don’t see their return in the future.. but you never know.
8. What are the top questions you get asked by your readers?
The top questions I get asked by my readers? That’s a tough one.. How did I come up with my blog name is probably the top one. Which is super easy.. Ryan & I have always loved Legos, & made the joke that we fit together like 2 Legos. We even went to the Lego store & each got a single Lego in our favorite color on a keychain. Since we were trying to have a baby, the conversation of how our child would be or what our life would be like was common, & at one point we made the observation that since we both had loved Legos so much, it wouldn’t be a surprise to either of us if we found Legos in our pockets at the most random times while out and about. We always laughed at that thought, and I felt it was the perfect fit for our blog. 🙂
9. If a new blogger came up to you today, and you only had a few minutes to talk, what would be your best blogging tip?
Stay active. Stay true to you. And as much as possible, stay genuine.
Read as many blogs as you can! Comment, read back stories, get to know the people behind them. They are your community. Comment Comment Comment, but while doing that do NOT Copy & Paste the same comment to each blog. It’s tacky and just plain rude. Leave a relevant comment to what you just read. If you see something that someone else did, & you want to give it a try then go ahead! put your own spin on it even! Just make sure when you do that, you give a small shout out to the blog that gave you the idea, and link them if you can! Blogging is all about networking your community.
10. How do you juggle blogging, and a family so flawlessly?
I don’t! Lol. I do write myself a calender of blog ideas for that month… what I would like to do each day but it is NOT set in stone! I mix it up, I skip a day, I skip a week! No really, I attempt to blog at least once a week, more if I can. But if I can’t then oh well! Life is what I’m living in the hear and now, with the people I can see, feel, and enjoy in person. I have to LIVE my life in real time, and if I get to write it down and share it with the world after then cool. 🙂
11. You’ve been blogging for 4 years, how much have you changed in that time? Has this affected your blog (or has your blog affected your life in anyway)
My blog has never affected my life, but my life has definitely affected my blog, and myself. The self reflection that it takes to write this way can have a certain effect. I have become more relaxed. Alot has happened in four years. We moved, we got pregnant, we lost a baby, we watched our niece be born,Ryan got laid off, we moved again, we had fertility issues, we had marriage issues, we had family isses, Ryan got a new job, I got a new job, we moved, we watched many friends get married, we watched many friends get pregnant, I lost a job, I went back to school, we got pregnant, we moved, our other niece was born, our son was born, we moved, my godson was born, Ryan and I almost split up, We had a falling out with our closest friends, we moved, Ryan and I got better… as I said, AOLT can happen in four years.
12. What are 5 items you never leave home without?
Cellphone w/ Music, Wallet, Lipgloss&Eyeliner, (cause you know they count together as one) Wedding Ring and something to drink.
13. Anything else you would like to add?
Live life, give love, smile often and when in doubt allow laughter to carry you you away.
Laughter, can heal the soul if you let it.
We get to chose who we let into our weird little worlds.
*You are only given a little spark of madness. You must not lose it.*
