Katniss is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, “The Hunger Games.” The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When Kat’s sister is chosen by lottery, Kat steps up to go in her place.

REVIEW:

THIS IS SUCH A GOOD BOOK!! I could not stop reading it! The entire book was suspenseful up until the end.  I stopped at least 3 or 4 times to tell my husband that he has to read it as soon as I finish, because it is just THAT GOOD!  The movie is coming out next month, and I definitely will see it.

This book is written for young adults, because the main characters are teenagers.  I feel that any adult, who enjoys a suspenseful and compelling story would also love this book.  The story is captivating and extremely dramatic.  You can’t put the book down, because you have to see who will die next and how they get killed.

In this book, Katniss Everdeen is one of 24 kids who compete in a survival game, called the Hunger Games, which is televised for the entire country of Panem (future North America) to watch.  Only one will get out alive.  There are 12 districts in Panem and each district submits the names of all the boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 18 into a raffle.  One boy and one girl are chosen from each district on reaping day.  Katniss’s little sister was chosen as the girl tribute from District 12, so Katniss volunteers to take her place.

The world in this book is very believable and well detailed.  I think that the future could completely turn this into some sort of a reality.  The book was so good, I immediately went out and bought book 2 and 3.  I can only hope they are as good as the first book, and that the movie coming out will do the book justice.

THE VERDICT:

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone!! It is very suspenseful, and well written. This book is definitely worth the purchase.  I think once anyone starts to read this book; they won’t be able to put it down!  I would have to question someone’s taste if they did not like this book.
